Nicole Watson, Marketing and Business Operations Coordinator, and Brent Potts, Business Development Manager, to visit Ringtail Forest and witness firsthand the impactful work being done by our partners at Greenfleet to restore native trees on Kabi Kabi Country.
‘Participating in the tree planting event to rebuild koala habitats filled me with a profound sense of purpose and joy. Knowing that my efforts contribute to the revival of Australia's precious wildlife is incredibly rewarding and inspires hope for a thriving future.’
Greenfleet revegetated 608 hectares with legally protected forests, which are projected to remove 513,887 tonnes of carbon over their lifetime. This is equivalent to taking around 120,000 average cars off Australia’s roads for an entire year. Their reforestation efforts also included 493 hectares of new koala habitat, protected through the remainder of the century. Since 2021, Greenfleet has restored nearly 1,000 hectares of native forest, providing crucial food and habitat for these iconic animals.
Amidst heightened awareness of greenwashing and insincere climate efforts last year, our partnership with Greenfleet ensures genuine climate action. By supporting the establishment of new, legally protected ecosystems, we align climate action with the preservation of nature.
Nicole and Brent witnessed the planting of over 750 native eucalypts, contributing to the restoration of a forest that now supports endangered koala and Greater Glider populations.
They plant native, biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand to restore nature and capture carbon emissions on behalf of their supporters. Protected for up to 100 years, these forests help fight the impacts of climate change, improve soil and water quality, and restore habitat for native wildlife, including many endangered species.
Our partnerships with local communities and Traditional Owners support broad benefits for the country and communities in which we live and work.
We're also grateful that Queensland received some much-needed rain!
On Friday, August 16th, the Metro team embraced their green thumbs for our second Tree Planting Day, and what a day it was! With the support of the Greenfleet Team, our team journeyed to the Lucas Heights Conservation Area to contribute to an important cause: restoring a native forest on Dharawal Country.
The day was truly special, as we had the opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible work being done to rejuvenate this vital area. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Graham Avery for his moving Acknowledgement of Country and for sharing his invaluable knowledge with us. We also want to acknowledge Brad and the dedicated team from Sutherland Shire for their assistance in making this event a success.
In a remarkable effort, our team planted and watered approximately 800 native trees! Among the species we contributed were Ironbark Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus paniculata) and Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera). These trees are critical for the restoration of the Endangered Ecological Community known as the ‘Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest’. This forest is legally protected and plays a crucial role in providing habitat for koalas, possums, and other regional wildlife.
Our day of planting not only contributed to the restoration of this precious forest but also strengthened our commitment to environmental stewardship. By joining forces to support such meaningful projects, we are not just planting trees; we are sowing the seeds for a healthier, more sustainable future.
